Claim Procedures
-
Make sure your family is safe, then proceed.
-
Report the claim to your agent or the Ohio FAIR Plan.
-
Take reasonable steps to protect your property from further damage. OFP policies
provide coverage for the reasonable costs necessary to protect your property.
If your roof has a hole in it, having it tarped would be reasonable. If you have water damage,
you can start the drying process and protect your items.
-
If the loss was caused by theft, vandalism or a vehicle, notify the police and file
a report.
-
Keep accurate records of your expenditures.
-
Do not discard items that you will be claiming. The representative will need to
inspect the items if you wish to claim them.
-
Be leery of any contractors who show up right after your loss or who are
pushy and request you to sign a contract. They may be a “storm chaser” who
is a contractor that may not act in your best interests.
Liability Claim
-
Report the claim immediately.
-
Obtain names and contact information for any witnesses. Take photos if possible.
-
Write a timeline of the events so you have a record.
-
Do not make any voluntary payments or obligations.
Claim Settlement - Miscellaneous Facts
-
If you have a mortgagee and a property (structure) claim, the mortgagee will
need to be listed on the settlement check. Contact your mortgagee to determine
their requirements for the processing of the check. The Mortgage Clause is
located in each policy.
-
Personal Property claims (Coverage C) are settled on an actual cash value basis
(ACV). ACV is defined as replacement cost less depreciation. Depreciation is
determined using the age of an item and its life expectancy.
